English learning motivation is one of the factors that directly influences the outcomeof English learning. English learning strategy is one of the five goals of the CompulsoryEducation English Curriculum Standards (2011). They both play a very important role inEnglish learning. The new English curriculum puts great emphasis on arousing students’learning motivation and guiding students’ how to use learning strategy effectively.The participants in the present study are70immigrant workers’ children from Grade7, Shaxi NO.1Middle School. This study based on questionnaires, surveys and interviews,using SPSS19.0to analyze the research data, is aimed at finding out the current status ofimmigrant workers’ children’s English learning motivation, their uses of English learningstrategy, and discusses the relationship between English scores and learning motivation andlearning strategies.It has yielded the following findings:(1) Immigrant workers’ children have twotypes of motivation: integrative motivation and instrumental motivation, and they arestrongly affected by instrumental motivation. However, in a whole, immigrant workers’children are lack of strong English learning motivation.(2)Immigrant workers’ childrencan’t use English learning strategy effectively.(3)Lack of strong English learningmotivation and effective English learning strategy are the important reasons whyimmigrant workers’ children get poor English achievements.Based on the findings, the thesis provides some suggestions for initiating theirEnglish learning motivation and guiding them to use English learning strategy effectively.It is hoped that, to a certain extent, this study can improve their English achievements andprovide some referred value for English teachers who teach immigrant workers’ children in publicsecondary school.
