In recent years, the problem of children left behind has attracted more attention of the government and the whole society. Children left behind face many problems in their growth. The problem of education is particularly prominent. With the popularity of English, English learning becomes more and more important in primary school. The motivation plays an important role in the learning of a second language. Language learning premise is why to learn, which is learning motivation. The thesis aims at analyzing left-behind children’ English learning motivation and its relationship with gender and grade. Then some feasible measures are put forward to promote the healthy growth of left-behind children.The participants in this study are323children left behind. All of them are from Xiangxi Liexi Primary School. They are from Grade There to Grade Six.There instruments including questionnaire, interview and classroom-observation are used. The system of Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS16.0) is used to summarize the participants responses to motivation and to exam how motivation is related to grade and gender.Through investigation, the results indicate children left behind don’t have strong motivation to learn English. Girls’ motivation is less than boy’s. The English learning motivation of children left behind increases along with the increase of the grade on the whole, but it is also unstable to some extent.
