Developing students’ ability of reading comprehension is one of themain objects of the English teaching for Junior high school nowadays, sohow to make the students read fast and efficiently turns out to be a mainobject for English teachers to explore in recent years. Meanwhile, manyEnglish teachers are short of this kind of skills on practicing summarizingstrategy in English reading teaching class. Summarizing strategy is stillquite a new strategy although a lot of experts at home and aboard have donea lot of researches into it. So the author carries on this research in juniorhigh school to find whether summarizing strategy is useful and can improvestudents’ reading scores.Tests and questionnaires are employed to compare the differencesbetween the two classes. The author makes a questionnaire about students’reading ways in daily English reading to find out what their problems are inthe current situation of their English reading and whether they usesummarizing strategy in English reading. During the experiment,45students in the comparative class are still given the traditional readingteaching method, while the rest of the students in the experimental classhave received training based on the summarizing strategy in reading for fourmonths. Data analysis and discussion will fall into two steps. In the outset,the descriptive analysis is made to compare the scores of experimental classand controlled class for the first test. Before the term ending, there is apost-test the author prepared for the two classes. Furthermore, identifywhether the summarizing strategy exert a certain influence upon theachievement of their reading. All the data collected is statistically analyzedwith the help of SPSS12.0. According to the data analysis in post-test(p<0.001), the author draws a conclusion to prove summarizing strategy isuseful and can improve students’ reading scores. The results of the study shows that summarizing strategy in Englishreading teaching is able to improve junior high school students’ readingscores and cultivate them positive attitude and interest toward Englishreading learning.
