Lead-in, which is the first step of a class, is one of the most basic steps inEnglish classroom teaching. It plays an important part in accomplishing tasks,improving teaching quality and achieving teaching objectives. Althoughlead-in takes up not too much time, sometimes it has a direct influence on theteaching effects. So when introducing new contents the teacher should use avariety of methods to arouse students’ enthusiasm and interest in learningEnglish, so as to improve the teaching efficiency.The main purposes of this thesis are to know about the present situationof English lead-in in junior high school and to find out the main problems.The author makes a research of the lead-in in No.4Junior High School inXilinhot, and then puts forward some advice of lead-in in senior high schoolaccording to the analysis of the research results.The author adopts two methods-the classroom observation, questionnairefor the investigation. First, In order to learn the present situation of Lead-in injunior high school in English classroom teaching and find out the existingproblems, the author observes12English classes of Grade Two in No.4JuniorHigh School in Xilinhot. Second, In order to know about teachers andstudents’ standpoints for lead-in, the author investigates6teachers. Last, theauthor analyzes the data collected from the research and puts forward someadvice on lead-in in junior high school.The results show that a variety of lead-ins are adopted by teachers,including revision lead-in, introducing the theme directly, story telling,showing pictures and so on. The lead-in methods of reviewing the learnt andintroducing the theme directly are frequently adopted by teacher. Lead-in canattract students’ attention, broaden students’ knowledge and help studentsnaturally get into new content. It plays a positive role in attracting the students’ interest of using the methods of the lead-in in classroom teaching.Asking question, story-telling and showing pictures nearly lie in the secondplace. However, some teachers neglect the design of lead-in and often useonly one or two fix ways to lead in new lesson, as a result, few students canget useful instruction from the lead-in step, and the efficiency of lead-in forthe English classroom teaching cannot be reflected very well.According to the results of the investigation, the author finds out thepedagogical implications as follows:(1) the teacher should design lead-inwith a clear goal;(2) the teacher should adopt flexible ways to lead in newmaterials;(3) the teacher should adopt appropriate the guide language forlead-in;(4) the teacher should design the lead in with “student-centered”;(5)the teacher should develop themselves in both theoretical knowledge andinnovation spirit. The author hopes that this search can help the teacherrealize the importance of lead-in and adopt effective lead-in, so as to improvethe teaching efficiency.
