In recent years, along with the advance of the GIS technology and perfect,as the nationalstrategy of development priority zones and the deepening of the function of populationdevelopment strategy research, the analysis of spatial correlation between topographic reliefand population distribution is of high theoretical significance and practical value to rationalutilization of land and evaluation of natural environment and other fields. Topographic reliefis an important quantitative indicator of representing surface relief in a rolling area, animportant reference index of regional development suitability evaluation, all kinds of facilitieslayout and site selection, population space mobile planning and so on. Currently based on GIStechnology, using the vector contour map or public released all kinds of precision DEM(digital elevation model), the topographic relief of study area can be got easily. Overall,however, when we use classic relief model formula to calculate relief of a certain area,necessary standardized premise is often lacked when using spatial scale and key parametersetting aspects which usually causes incomparability of relief and affect correct application ofresearch conclusion. Population distribution is the combination of population and a certainspace location. That is a form of positioning certain number of population in the specificgeographical location. Most of the current research on population distribution are based on thenational or provincial scale as large range of population distribution and its relationship withtopographic relief, the results of practical value and application value is not big enough.This article put forwarded concept of basic topographic relief through selectingLyvshunkou district of Dalian as a case study area according to existing research foundationand relevant state regulations. On the basis of1:50000plotting scale based on basic km gridand vector contour lines of10m contour interval on basic topographic map, using TINinterpolation method to establish DEM of10m resolution, and calculate topographic reliefthrough100m×100m geographic grid as a calculation relied on grid, altitude difference within3.5m as ground conditions, calculating topographic relief of km grid. This can provide normsand rules for current measurement and research of topographic relief.We respectively explorethe relationship among population distribution and the altitude value, population distributionand gradient value, population distribution and its distance from the coastline via integrateduse of terrain analysis and spatial analysis functions such as buffer analysis in geographic information system. And then we can sum up the space regularity of population distribution;So further study can be continued on correlation of regional basic topographic relief andpopulation distribution.The results show that the concept and model of basic topographic relief is operable; In thearea of smaller scale, the population distribution with some regularity is closely linked to itsterrain factor; At the same time basic topographic relief has strong spatial correlation with itspopulation distribution. This can provide some guidance and reference not only for reasonabledistribution of regional population, scientific development and construction, but also for otherlarge scale regional population migration and population layout in Dalian and the wholeLiaodong peninsula.
