“Ordinary high school English Curriculum Standards(experimental)” was published in2003, which requires that the total target of English teaching in Senior Middle schoolscorresponding to which the new high school English teaching materials appears,should include the English ability in language knowledge, language skills, learningstrategies, learning attitudes, and cultural awareness. This article that mainly regardsthe new version of textbooks as the research object, focuses on the research of the fivecompulsory book reading cultivating the students’ cultural awareness, knowledgeculture and communicative culture Which can realize the aim of study in the“Ordinary high school English Curriculum Standards(experimental)”? and Which is infavor of the cultivation of the students cultural awareness? Do English teachers oftenfoster high school students to “instill cultural consciousness"? Whether do high schoolstudents know how to develop their own “instill cultural consciousness"? So after theordinary high school English curriculum standard issued in2003, this paper hascarried on the research of the present status of the new teaching material readingmaterial to cultivate students cultural awareness training implementation presentsituation, to sure its achievements, to find the deficiencies, and to analyze its reason.Material analysis and interview research method of combining the teachers andstudents are mainly used.There are six parts in this paper: The first part of the introduction introduces the research problem, researchsignificance, literature review, research methods and the innovation ideas. In the reviewof the literature, cultural consciousness is introduced of literature review domestic andforeign language textbook, textbook reading materials and teaching materials in readingmaterials. The literature method, content analysis method and interview method aremainly used in this study. The second part is the basic theory study of culturalawareness, including the definition of culture, cultural awareness, high school Englishteaching, the “Ordinary high school English Curriculum Standards(experimental)”requirements for the senior high school English textbooks and the feasibility ofcultivating the senior school students cultural awareness. The relevant requirements ofthe theory is the relationship between language and culture, is the relationship betweenEnglish textbooks of high school and high school students cultural awarenesscultivation and the requirements in high school English curriculum standards. The thirdpart analyzes the status of implementation of reading materials cultivating studentscultural awareness in the senior high school English teaching, which studies theprogress and deficiencies of our current English teaching in senior middle schoolreading materials cultivating students’cultural awareness and the reasons for thedeficiencies. The analysis of this part is mainly on the basis of the content analysismethod as well as the interview to students and teachers. The study founds that the newtextbooks in the content of culture in reading materials arrangement are verycomprehensive and of humanities and the social significance is of stronger, more fullyreflect the cultural background of English countries. This is a side of the progress.And on the other side, it also has some shortcomings: the communicative cultural contentsare too little; the senior middle school students in reading material contentis are notinterested; students are lack of opportunities to practice communication in learninglanguage strategies; classroom teaching culture dissemination are rarely; extra curricularrarely creates environment for cultural awareness. The analysis of this part mainly is onthe basis of the content analysis method according to students’ and teachers’ interviewresults.The fourth part are some suggestions: the first, suggestions about teachingmaterials; the second, those about the teachers; the third, those about students; the forth,teaching environment and teaching equipment. This study suggests that there will bethe increase of the communicative cultural content and language; reading materials arerequired to keep up with the time we can stimulate students interest in; schools andteachers are trying to create the conditions for the cultural awareness of students in theclassroom.
