In recent years, English speaking plays a more and more important role in thesenior high school entrance exam in Guangzhou. So the requirements for students‘speaking are become higher and higher, but the fact is that the students‘oral abilitiesare still not as good as expected. Though Junior One students have possessed the basicgrammatical knowledge of English and acquired a certain amount of vocabulary, theyare very poor in speaking and don‘t know how to use the words correctly in speaking.Speaking has become one of the most difficult tasks in English learning. This study makes an investigation in the form of interview and questionnairewhich shows that the lack of understanding the accurate meaning of the vocabulary isa big barrier for the students to speak fluently and accurately. The theory of framesemantics proposes that in order to understand the meaning of the vocabulary, firstly, the learners must understand the conceptual system which fits for the words, and thentry to understand any concept meaning in the system. Only when based on theexperience and cultural background can the words be understood. After referring tostandard for evaluation of the oral English in junior high school entrance exam inGuangzhou, the author choose the language marks and the total marks a s the standardto check if the new kind of speaking teaching method is effective for improving thestudents‘oral competence or not. Thus, the author tries using a teaching method basedon the frame semantics and attempts to explore the following two questions:Question one: Can the oral English teaching based on Frame Semantics improvethe students‘vocabulary using competence in oral English?Question two: Can the oral English teaching based on Frame Semantics improvejunior high school students‘oral English competence? In order to answer the two questions above, in the process of the study, theauthor had the participants from the EG and CG take part in the oral exam twice. Thepre-test was carried out when they entered the junior high school. And the post-testwas carried out after a term‘s experiment.Through comparing the results of the pre-test and the post-test, it revealed the following major findings:(1) The oral teaching based on frame semantics do facilitate the understandingthe meaning and the using of the words, which is the basis for oral English.(2) If the students master the frame and the frame elements, they can: first, make lots of elements available in students‘brain when the oral topic is given, whichcan be used in the speaking; second, the students can speak more accurately andproperly in different time, at different place and to different person; third, the teachercan divided the speaking topic into several frames which can help the students toremember what they are going to speak in systems, so the speaking task will becomeeasier..(3) The understanding of cultural frame is important for oral fluency and wordsusing accuracy.Based on the major findings above, implications for English speaking areproposed:(1) Vocabulary is the basis of the oral English learning; teachers must make greatefforts on vocabulary teaching.(2) Culture teaching should be a certain part in teaching and English teachersplay an important role in spreading the culture of a foreign language.(3) The teachers can try using this oral English teaching method based on framesemantics because the students of EG actually improve a lot the vocabulary usingcompetence and oral competence in this study...
