Currently, China is undergoing social transitional period. Following the sharp changes insocial relation, profound changes are witnessed in people’s living style correspondently. Atthis time, varieties of tags come into exist. They are representatives of people’s thinking modeand behavior. Homosexuality is one of the typical representatives of these tags. In previousstudies, different disciplines had different explanations of the reason that lead tohomosexuality, however, they coincided with each other that series of problems may becaused by homosexuality in the process of gradually opened up society. Hence, because of theprinciple of social work and the specificity of homosexual community itself, the issue ofhomosexuality is bound to be faced by social workers and this kind of work is worth givingin-depth discussing. The research on homosexuality may become one of an ineligible trend of social work inthe new era. It serves as a totally new exploration and has a vital practical significance. Whenconducting this kind of work, social workers should find out a way, which based on theexisting social work principles, values and methods to cope with the issue of homosexualityand provide help for this special vulnerable community so as to do their utmost to avoidproblems, change homosexuals’ vulnerable conditions and help homosexuality to live betterand healthier lives. The work on homosexuality is based on the scientific theories and the realistic socialneeds. Theoretically, sociology, psychology and moral philosophy serve as its theoretical basis.Realistically, the work is regarded as a need to enrich the society, to promote the healthydevelopment of homosexuals and to maintain social stability.By analyzing experiences from home and abroad (basically focus on the experiences offamily acceptance and some related researches), under the perspective of social work, thisthesis attempts to discuss the way for social workers to help homosexuals to be accepted bythemselves, their families and society. By analyzing the varieties of difficulties confronted byhomosexuals, the author attempts to find out an intervention point and reasonable methods tohelp homosexuals to be finally accepted by their families. Through this discussion, the authoralso hopes to provide practical guidance for social workers when offering help for this special group. The conclusions of this thesis are as follows:Principles of social work intervention on homosexuals serve as moral restriction andguidance for social workers. When providing help for this kind of people, social workers mustabide by the principle of respect, acceptance, equality, self determination, confidentiality andother basic principles because all these above principles are the prerequisites of homosexuals’family acceptance.Although the social work on homosexuality is feasible in theoretical sense, however, dueto the current institutional background and traditional secular concepts, there are still manyoverwhelming problems in practical sense. Therefore, in a short period of time, it isunrealistic to get a good result that homosexuals be accepted by their families. According tothe present working phase, we can safely come to a conclusion that only the slow explorationand progress can better meet the condition of China. Finally, through this research on individual, we can see that for homosexuals, there arestill many barriers and difficulties for their families to accept them; however, we can alsowitness that the application of some principles and methods of social works have got somepositive effects. Through analysis, we can learn that the development of current work onhomosexuals should base on the theoretical basis and national conditions. Therefore, thedevelopment of homosexual social work at present stage should start with theoretical researchand exploration based on our basic national conditions. The researchers may explore solutionsby advocating homosexuals’ self-acceptance first, and then their families’ acceptance, andfind a reasonable, feasible and effective approach in the end. The author hopes, in the nearfuture, there is a mature mode to solve the issue of homosexuals’ family acceptance, theoretically or pragmatically.
