Inquiry learning is a kind of teaching mode which faces all students, to enlighten students’ intelligence and ability, with cooperative and group learning as the main form. Different from traditional teaching, it emphasizes that students take the initiative to find out and solve problems. In recent years, English listening teaching have been valued in senior middle school. But the effect of the students’ listening has not yet been improved. Students tend to lose joints in this part. It can be boiled down to two causes:one is students, the other is teachers. For students, they don’t listen with a purpose. They just accept voice input passively, but not distinguish them actively. For teachers, they are not well-targeted in teaching. Some teachers often lecture but seldom listen, or just listen without explanation. The listening effect is poor.Based on the above issues, the author considers designing an inquiry-based listening teaching model (ILTM) and implementing it, to prove the feasibility and effectiveness of ILTM.To this end, the author carried out a questionnaire among124students in Class A, B, Senior2in Nan’an Liucheng Middle School, Fujian. Then Class A was taken as controlled class and adopted traditional listening teaching method. Class B was experimental class and adopted ILTM. After a five-month teaching experiment, the listening scores before and after the experiment were analyzed. Results showed that the initiatives of students in listening were enhanced after experiment. Many students said that they hoped to be able to grasp the speed of playback and adjust their attention and pressure, etc., to improve their listening comprehension. Comparing pre-and post-test, the pre-test scores of Class A and B were20.2and19.5respectively, but rose to20.5and21.6in post-test. Class B which implemented listening experiment made greater progress. From the above, the author concluded that inquiry learning was indeed of certain effect for students to improve listening. This paper offers an effective experimental mode to middle school teachers and helps to change the concepts of teachers and students, to establish a new, independent, open and practical class.
