In the era of internationalization of higher education, universityranking is gradually becoming a global phenomenon of higher educationand has increasing influence. Subject ranking is one form of universityranking. In recent years, subject ranking become a trend of universityranking exercise at both national level and global level owing to thecharacteristics of strong comparability between objects. Nevertheless,most of the existing subject rankings rely on measures of reputation andresearch performance, while they say little about the education quality ofdifferent subjects.To solve the problem, this study builds a ranking of US mathematicsdoctoral programs based on the academic appointments of the doctoralgraduates of a mathematics program in all other mathematics programs.The PageRank algorithm is used as ranking method so that both thenumber of appointments and the prestige of destination programs aretaken into account.After obtaining the ranking results, we will explore the value andcharacteristics of the ranking methodology by comparing it with otherrepresentative rankings. To verify its effect in evaluating the educationquality, we choose three types of high-level talent in the field ofmathematics, and collect their Ph.D. graduate schools. Meanwhile, thisstudy investigates some doctoral graduates’ placement in2011and2012,to further verify the accuracy and stability of the PageRank algorithm.At last, we explore its applicability and then analyze its applicationin global subject ranking and its promotion in China. |
