STS Teaching Case Design And Practice Of The Modular Optimization Of Biology In Senior High School Molecules And Cells

STS education is a new educational concept formed in the science educationreform throughout the world, and it is a kind of science education organized andimplemented with the emphasis on the interactive relationship between science,technology and society, and the application of science and technology in socialproduction and life development as the guiding ideology. It can cultivate students’emotion of loving life and science and the consciousness of concerning the society,and the application of STS teaching model into biology teaching is an effectiveapproach of realizing the quality education.With the development of modern educational reform, the wide launch of STSeducation in middle school education stage has already become an inexorable trend,and meanwhile, the new curriculum and college entrance examination reformincreasingly reflects STS educational thought. The biology teaching materialspublished by People’s Education Press in2007provides excellent curriculumresources and rich elements for the implementation of STS educational concepts andlaunch of STS education.In this paper, the origin, development history and related contents of STSeducational concept re illustreated, and current status of domestic and foreign STSeducation is narrated. Detailed and comlete analysis of the application of STSeducational concepts in the teaching of biology in senior high school is conducted. Itproposes that STS teaching will be favorable for improving the scientific literacy andenthuasiam of studying biology, and cultivating the social adaptative ability ofstudents, and it is quite necessary to carry out STS teaching in biology teaching.Through analyzing related contents in the new teaching material of biology insenior high school Molecule and Cell, it has been discovered that although STSeducational concept runs through the teaching materials, the optimization of STSeducational pattern in the teaching process may be favorable for improving theenthusiasm of studying biology, biological scientific literacy, academic results, andability of adapting to the society. On that basis, four methods in STS educationalpattern are applied, including the classroom penetration education, launching ofspecial education, penetration of extra-curricular activities, as well as the launching ofoff-campus practical activities, by following the STS educational concepts andprinciples. Practices are conducted in four teaching cases, such as the design andoptimization of the exploration into the function and essence of enzyme, health knowledge lecture of healthy life and staying away from cancer; making fruit wine forexploring the cellular respiration of saccharomycetes. Students’ academic resultsbefore and after the practices are analyzed with mathematical statistics, and accordingto the result, the optimized STS teaching cases will be helpful for improving students’academic performance and interest in studying biology, as well as the biologicalscience literacy.In the end, reflections on STS teaching are illustrated, general problemsconfronted by the implementation of STS teaching in senior high school are analyzed,and it is suggested to focus on the STS educational concept and give full play to theeducational function of schools. Teachers shall strengthen the teaching studies,promote the teaching reform, and improve the business level by referring to the theoryand principle, so as to adapt to the brand new demands on teachers in the newsituation.How to apply the STS educational concepts and teaching methods into thebiology of senior high school effectively shall be further studied and explored in thefuture course teaching.
