Constructivism, which plays a positive role in guiding English teaching reformand practice in China’s senior high school, is one of the important branches ofcognitive learning theory. This paper proposes the possibility of applying the theory ofconstructivism into the underachievers’ English teaching, with analyzing the situationof the underachievers’ English learning as the starting point, and designs several newteaching models based on constructivism, providing a new perspective and theoreticalbasis for English teaching.The aim of the thesis is to prove that the theory of constructivism is functional forthe English underachievers’ English teaching. It also wants to check out theexperiment based on constructivism the underachievers have improve their Englishunevenly and from the analysis we can find out better ways in English teaching in ourlater education.The methods of research in the thesis have quantity and quality methods,questionnaire method and experiment method. Quantity method contains thosestatistics like the grade of each underachiever in each paper test, those percentages ofanalysis of the underachievers’ questionnaire, the figures of how many theunderachievers are asked to do the experiment. Quality method points to thoseresearch as how much the students are interested in the English learning, therelationship between the underachievers and the teachers. The result of the qualityresearch can better give the information of how the underachievers should be pickedout to be trained on the program, what standard is good while choosing theunderachievers.The paper falls into five parts. In the brief introduction, the background, the aimand significance of the present study will be referred to. The first chapter is aboutliterature review. At first, the definition of underachievers and English underachieverswill be talked about. Then the previous studies on English underachievers at homeand abroad will be discussed. Finally, summary of the study at home and abroad will be made. The second chapter acts as the theoretical foundation of the whole study. Itdescribes the philosophical background and the constructivism learning theory.Furthermore, it expounds the correlation of constructivism learning theory and theunderachievers’ English teaching. The third chapter mainly talks about themethodology, including objective, subjective, instruments, design, and theimplementation of the experiment. The fourth chapter refers to results and dataanalysis. In the last chapter, the author will make a summary of the major findings ofthis research. The author also points out the limitations and proposes some advice forfuture studies.
