With the Criterion of New English Curriculum issued, the demand that teaching and learning should be converted from language competence to language performance is proposed. It plays a more and more important role to cultivate the students'reading ability in senior high schools in English teaching, so some traditional teaching methods are confronted with great challeges. Numbers of teachers spend so much time and energy in reading practice to enlarge the students' vocabulary. However, they can't achieve what they want as expected. As a result, this paper manages to apply English vocabulary encoding strategies instruction in senior high English vocabulary teaching.Since the 1970s, language teaching theoretics has taken much account of vocabularu teaching gradually. But many vocabulary teaching strategies can't be employed well by Chinese senior high school students in special situation. For example, they are overloaded with various subjects; there is a lack of suitable materials. Starting with three basical elements-phoneme,morph and meaning of words,the paper brings forward vocabulary encoding strategies accordingly which can develop the students'skills of listening,speaking,reading and writing, meanswhile, these skills can also advance the students'vocabulary encoding strategies. The practice of teaching indicates that vocabulary encoding strategies can save a great deal of time in vocabulary teaching and learning and enhance efficiency of vocabulary explicit learning.This thesis refers to the memorial theories of psychology and cognitive psychology, as well as the effects of bilingual representation and its accessible mechanism.The author further researches how to conduct English vocabulary encoding strategies instruction in senior high school against the background of New Curriculum Standard with the cutting point where the students learn to use vocabulary enconding strategies to grasp new words.After that, two intact classes of students in Senior 1 in Quanzhou Yicong Middle School were assigned to experimetal and control conditions.45 students in the experimental class received guidelines of vocabulary encoding strategies instruction, while another 45 students in the control class followded the traditional way of teaching.The experiment lasted for eight weeks. Test and a questionaire survey were conducted among the students in the experimental class and in the control class. All the data collected from the tests and the survey was entered into computer and processed with the SPSS10.0. The analysis reveals that vocabulary achievement of the students in the experimental class is far better than that of the ones in the control class. From the findings it suggests that the students familiar with vocabulary encoding strategies can get better performance in English vocabulary learning and also improve their English proficiency. Vocabulary encoding strategies instruction is very effective in English vocabulary teaching in senior high schools after New Curriculum Standard issued in 2003.
