With the accelerated process of globalization and the development of technology, the world has become a new information society. In the new information society, as the means of obtaining information, English listening skill will become more important. The High School English Curriculum Standards clearly put forward new requirements for high school students in listening and speaking, training students obtain information and understand the discourse by listening. The listening material is not confined to textbooks any more but the listening material is related to students’ life and it highlight the ability of thinking in English as well as the ability of emotional expression.(ministry of education,2011) However there are still many problems, the English teaching cannot meet the listening capabilities of new curriculum standards for senior high school students. In high school English teachers always pay more attention to the grammar and reading instruction, but ignore the listening teaching. In senior high school, there are not separate listening lessons and the listening materials generally are the exam’s materials, while these listening materials cannot excite students’ interest.With the development of computer-based multimedia devices and the varieties of people’s communication and expression, the multi-modal theory came into being. Multi-modal teaching mainly refers to teachers, but sometimes also refers to learners. They use a variety of modes( such as, the internet, video, sound, etc) to obtain、process and transmit information with multimedia devices. It is going to use varieties of teaching ways and teaching methods to mobilize students’ varieties of senses(such as, visual、tactile、olfactory、kinesthetic、auditory, etc) to obtain、process and transmit information at the same time. English listening also includes several modes. This paper synthesizes domestic and foreign multi-modal theory studies, and its application in various fields, especially its application in education. On this basis, this paper proposes the application of multi-modal education theory to English listening teaching in senior high school.This paper aims to study how to apply multi-modal education theory to listening teaching in high school. And prove that can arouse the students’ interests of English listening and improve the efficiency of English listening teaching. This can make English listening class more interesting and efficient.
