The 21st centry is regarded as the age of information. The information and technology is changing our life-style at an amazing rate, and then influence the way of our education mading the way of teaching and learning changed. The informalization of education has also changed the concepts of curriculum、teaching and learning so that changed the educational relationship between people, and changed the educational mode thoroughly in the end. The multimedia technology has the characterastics of high-level integration, favorable interaction, large information capacity and timely feedback, which can make a variety of imformation act on the the learners’s sense so that the learning process will be more interesting, more natural and more humanized. On the other hand, the multimedia technology can also distract the attraction of learners when misused. At present, the multi-modal PPT has been widely applied in senior high school biology teaching, but many negative phenomena can be seen in class. For example, many students are busy in taking notes missing the interaction with the teacher, or the class participation is only apparent which can be testified by the noisy class. As to these negative phenomena, we conduct a research on the student participation when having class with multi-modal PPT. The research is based on the the different structure for the same lesson and the classroom observation method is adopted to discover the class atmosphere and teachers’ multi-modal PPT use condition. And according to the results gained by classroom observation method, we raise questions; conduct research with references; design a representive questionnaire and analyze the statistic result by SPSS to study the influence of the multi-modal PPT on the student participation. In the meanwhile, we make sample analysis on 11 PPTs (663 slides in all) from different biology teachers; detect the problems of them and put forward specific suggestion and advice. The research results turn out that students’participation which included behavior paticipatin, congnitive paticipation and emotion participation under the Multi-modal PPT Assisted Instruction Environment was not high. The phenomenon of surface involvement was widespread. The teachers’ attitude and cognition on the multi-media PPTs contradicts the students’, which makes students busy in taking notes or behave just like observers. So the students’cognitive paticipation is very dependent. Their emotional paticipation tends to be anxious when missing the notes or unable to keep up with the PPTs. And the students tend to be tired when facing the unappropariate layout and the page full of words. There is a positive correlativity between the students’behavioural paticipation and emotional paticipation. And there is a same relationship between their cognitive paticipation and emotional paticipation. Teachers tend to use multi-modal PPTs combing texts, pictures, graphs, videos, animations and other elements as a whole when giving open class while tend to use text-modal PPTs when giving normal classes. Teachers often overlook writing on the blackboard and depend on the PPTs too excessively during class. Teachers’ PPTs are usually copied from the internet so that they often have too many contents, inconsistent color, undersize fonts and little concise description of pictures, which brings students addtional cognitive load. Students dislike the text-modal PPTs most and hope their teachers to write the key points on the black board. The application of animations is unreasonable since it will distract students’attention. Multi-modal PPT assisted instruction bidirectional influence students’participation in biology class in middle school. Only when the multi-modal PPT designed by the teacher is in line with the law of students’ psychological cognition, it can promote the students to actively participate in the classroom, otherwise it will increase the students’cognitive load, which will affect the students’ cognitive and emotional participation. So we raise several advices for the issues mentioned above:1. Teaching content should be regarded as mainstay and the principle should be student-oriented when making PPTs.2. Page layout should be concise and unified.3. We should focus on contents and supplement stimulation of students when choosing media materials.4. Teacher-student interation and combination of blackboard writing and media are required in class.5. Teaching should enhance the development of teacher profession and supervision is also required.
