Sustainable development is considered as one of learning city construction goals for the first time in the first international conference of learning city. It makes a solemn promise that developing lifelong learning will promote sustainable development of cities. Furthermore, the conference treats the implementation of sustainable development education as an important evaluating part of learning city construction.The United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014) has come into the summary stage, and has made great progress in formal education system. By studying sustainable development education, we can maintain the vitality of sustainable development education program; realize the goal of the construction of learning city, and sustainable development education. It is of great significance to study the topic.Rather than put the perspective to formal education system, this study put focus on the construction of learning city under the background of the sustainable development of citizen education, and investigate the present situation of Shanghai citizen education for sustainable development. From study, I get the following conclusions:(1)The citizens’ overall level of education for sustainable development knowledge is low;(2)For citizens in Shanghai, the Internet, radio/television, newspapers/magazines/books are main ways to get sustainable development education. School education is also an important channel for the spread of it;(3)Citizens pay little attention to the education for sustainable development. The conformity degree, the sense of responsibility and engagement of education for sustainable development are relatively high;(4)In term of education for sustainable development, citizens in Shanghai have achieved a higher degree (recognition of more than 90%);(5)The satisfaction of the implementation of sustainable development education in Shanghai is not optimistic. Most citizens are dissatisfied with the present implementation situation of education for sustainable development in Shanghai;(6)The majority of citizens (ninety percent) think the administrative institutions, education departments, enterprises, social organizations and individuals, play an important role in implementing the education for sustainable development;(7) The percent of citizens who participate in the proportion of the overall education for sustainable development is relatively low;(8)Gender, age, education level, occupational factors and so on are related to the present situation of citizens’ education for sustainable development.Based on the study, the author puts forward some suggestions to improve the education for sustainable development of citizens in Shanghai.
