New curriculum reform began in China in 2001. In the mathematics curriculum standards(experiment draft), to solve the real problems and infiltrate the mathematical thought into the content were taken as one of the four major goals of mathematics education.In the process of new curriculum reform, the primary textbook has been revised, especially mathematics textbook by Jiangsu Education Press and People Education Press are more outstanding. People Education Edition experimental textbook has increased a new unit of Math Square. The new unit implies a lot of important mathematics thought methods. The emergence of Math Square unit causes teacher’s cognition to change. The traditional teaching pattern has not been applied in the new teaching pattern of Math Square unit. It is the instructional goal of Math Square content that students master the methods of mathematics thought through learning the content of the new unit.This thesis has taken the new edition of primary mathematics textbook of school as an example, it has analyzed essence of Math Square content, requirement of curriculum standards and textbooks. By selecting the teaching contents of Math Square of the first semester of the second grade and the fourth grade, observation and analysis has been made in the classroom instruction. In the class of overlapping problem, some problems have been found about instructional design and methods by observing, recording and analyzing what happened in the classroom. Some basic suggestions of teaching of Math Square were put forward by revising the original design.The research result shows that some teachers ignore the content of math square, and do not know the students’ learning psychology, therefor this unit are not paid much attention. The student’s thinking competence is weak and needs improving.This thesis has integrated the research and lesson study of overlapping problem, which implied the requirements of current curriculum standards. Some instructional suggestions have been put forward based on the inquiry of real learning problems. Teachers should understand completely the contents of mathematics square, methods of mathematics thought, learning strategies. In a word, the new reasonable and operable instructional design has been proposed.
