Context:The main method used for academic evaluation in the area of sports humanistic sociology, since its emergence, is qualitative, like peer review. Sports sociology uses the same method, as a branch of sports humanistic sociology. Nowadays, sports play an increasingly important role in all aspects of society, how to evaluate academic outputs in sports sociology becomes an issue of which is worthy to be studied. Due to the subjectivity, the absence of quantitative expression and of comparative analysis with concrete data in peer review. We need to find a method, which combines qualitative and quantitative research, to evaluate the academic influence this area. In recent years, application study of periodical literature-based bibliometric receives more attention. The quality of journals is measured by new scientific index, like H-index. Bibliometric is a comprehensive assessment both qualitative and quantitative to evaluate academic output and influence. It could analyze the current situation and predict the research trend of a scientific area with a relative objective point of view, instead of a subjective judgment. Bibliometric which combines quantitative and qualitative research is appropriate for academic evaluation in sports sociology. It could be very helpful in analyze of academic influence. It is able to explore hot topic, current situation and trend in sports sociology by analyzing internal and external characteristics of articles. Methods:This research uses the method of bibliometric, combines with literature consultation, expert interview, mathematical statistic and logic analysis, to analyze 1871 outputs of sport sociology. These outputs are filtered from CNKI database, dated from 2003 to 2012, based on four editions (2000,2004,2008, and 2011) of "Chinese Core Journal List"Aims:The aim of the research is using biliometrical indicators to overviewing development and trend in the area of sport sociology, and to exploring the value of this method for evaluation in sports disciplines and its academic influence.Results:1、From 2003 to 2012, research in sports sociology maintained at high proportion, had a stable output and in a rising trend. The peak of outputs appeared in 2008,2009 and 2010, because of Beijing Olympic Games,2、Citation frequency, number of funded theses and H-index show that, outputs leading the research trend in sport sociology, are mainly issued from economically developed areas and from major sport colleges. These outputs also play the role of reference for other regions’disciplinary studies. "Journal of Beijing Sport University" and "Journal of Shanghai University of Sport" are the top two both in number of published articles and in influence of articles.3、44.9% of researchers in sport sociology complete study by their own. But the number of inter-regional and interdisciplinary cooperation is generally increasing. The percentage of published articles is directly proportional to citation, both in solo-authored and co-authored articles.4、Basic research, applied researches integrate sports sociology and other disciplines, comparative research with developed countries became commoner. According to topic and keyword, sport sociology has a wide range of subjects, mainly focus on sports for all. Compare to foreign researches, local research bias theory and lack of comparative analysis in applied research.
