As a component of teaching process, teaching material is not only a leading tool for teachers’teaching but also a major resource for students’learning. With the deepening of curriculum reform for basic education, a large number of teaching materials in different versions flood the market. Under the circumstances, how to evaluate teaching materials in a scientific way and make better use of the teaching materials and improve teaching quality is of great significance.Based on studies about teaching materials evaluation and studies about structure of teaching materials, the two sets of textbooks Go for It published by Peoples’ Education Press in 2007 and 2013 respectively are compared in the research. The research is majored at answering the following questions:are there any differences between 2007 and 2013 textbooks in the perspectives of language skills, language knowledge, attitudes to learning, learning strategies and cultural awareness? What opinions do teachers and students have after using the textbooks? Based on the analysis, the conclusion is achieved to explore the weaknesses of new textbooks.Research methods used in the paper include:literature survey, comparative study, questionnaire and interview. Based on the study on corresponding studies, the weaknesses of existing researches are explored with an aim to determine research objective and combination point of theories and study. Comparative study is to find out differences between the two sets of textbooks objectively. Questionnaire is to collect data based on students’and teachers’replies to certain questions and then make analysis on using of the two sets of textbooks. Interview is to make face-to-face conversation with interviewees and gain some information about the study. It is used to be a complement to questionnaire.It is found that teachers and students are more satisfied with the textbooks of 2013, because it is more in accordance with the requirements of New English Curriculum. The textbooks have advantages in organization, column design and contents choice. There are great improvements in quantity of vocabulary and pronunciation, promoting students’comprehensive development in listening, speaking, reading and writing. However, there are some disadvantages in the textbooks, for instance, grammatical knowledge is arranged in disorder, writing and listening materials are difficult, reading is large in quantity, etc. Based on the problems, some suggestions are put forward to teachers at the end of the thesis, including:making appropriate deletion or addition to teaching contents, integrating teaching contents and making adjustment to teaching order.
