Johann Gottlieb Fichte (1762-1814) is an outstanding German classical philosopher and a great educator. But his educational theory and practice of Fichte is less popular than his philosophical thoughts and as a result, hasn’t gained enough attention.Education is an important area among Fichte’s academic theory and practice. According to Fichte, people at that time suffer a lot because of the social demoralization and education is an effective measure to change it. Firstly, Fichte’s educational theory is based on his philosophical thoughts. Being the core concept, ego exists as an independent one as well as a social one and the final goal of ego is to achieve the rationality and perfection of itself with the power of education. And at the same time, ego needs the protection of the freedom of ego and non-ego which can be provided by moral education. What’s more, the revealed religion owns the irreplaceable function of education. On the other hand, influenced by the growth environment and historical background, Fichte carries out a series of educational practice which is, to some extent, also directed by his educational theory. He has a deep reflection on education after his experience of private teacher during the early age. When teaching in University of Jena and University of Berlin, he improves the development of German philosophy and set the mission for universities to research and study. In Fichte’s later life, German nation is invaded by France. Under such a critical situation, Fichte believes that only when all German is well educated, can they save themselves to regain independence. The educational theory of Fichte is of rich meaning, exploring educational issues in the perspective of human nature. And his practice has a profound impact on the revival of German nation and the development of education, thus opening up a new direction for it for the coming age. The educational theory and practice is an important research aspect, which is very helpful for people to learn.
