As is known to all,a spoken skill is one of the most important skills for English learners, and it has been paid more attention to. The ultimate goal of learning a language for students is to be able to communicate with others accurately, fluently. However,the author finds that many high school students are afraid of speaking English,and in our country a lot of people have no interest in oral communication. As a result,it is not rare to see that the English communicative competence,especially most Chinese students are weaker at the speaking ability. In this article,the author first presents a brief analysis of the present situation of the junior middle school English learning,and discusses the reasons for this situation. There are two main aspects: one of it is that there is no balance in education resources at primary schools. The other one is that we are influenced by Exam-oriented education, neglecting the cultivation of language skills. Aiming at the weakness, the author adopts a new "cooperative learning" teaching mode. This paper focuses on how to apply the "cooperative learning" mode in the process of teaching oral English in junior middle schools. The author has conducted a one-year teaching experiment among the second grade of junior middle school students. By comparing the results before and after the experiment and the analysis of the questionnaires and interviews, the author confirmed the three hypotheses:(1) Cooperative learning improves the junior middle school students’ English learning habit;(2) Cooperative learning enhances their interest and confidence in learning spoken English;(3) Cooperative learning promotes their participation in the oral practice and their positive emotions as well. The conclusion is that the cooperative learning mode has been proved to be positive and effective in teaching oral English to junior middle school students.
