In 2003 the Ministry of Education promulgated the Standards of the Ordinary High School Chemistry Curriculum(experimental) and started a new round of curriculum reform, making the high school chemistry curriculum pays more attention to improve students’ scientific literacy and their overall development.In this round of curriculum reform, the textbooks use sub-modules to present the contents,which has brought significant changes to the teaching content system. And there’s no doubt that BOOK 3---Structure and Properties of the Matter gets the biggest change, which brings some challenges to the teacher’s teaching and makes BOOK 3 become a focus in the research of the chemistry teaching after the reform.To adapt to the reform and offer references to chemistry teachers’ teaching, this paper,which is on the basis of the teaching practice and under the guidance of the theory of the teaching content system, carefully analyses the curriculum goals and the three dimensional target, and seriously study the value and status of the course. With the curriculum goals and the three dimensional target, it further sorts out the presentation situation of the material structure theory in the stage of compulsory education, and the compulsory and elective stage.Through comprehensive analysis, carding and integration, it builds a more complete high school knowledge system in the field of The Structure and Properties of Matter. At the same time, it also gives us a further understanding of the important clues of material structure theory in chemistry teaching, and strengthens the core value of the theory.The purpose of building material structure theory is to better guide the students to learn the knowledge and construct their own knowledge system.This paper focuses on the analysis of the knowledge system. Meanwhile, it pays more attention to the difficulties that teachers and students have in the process of teaching and learning. So the author does a questionnaire about the teaching situation among teachers and students from some places of southwest, including Luzhoui,Yibin and so on. According to the result of the questionnaire and some further communications with some teachers, this paper sums up many problems in the process of teaching and learning of BOOK 3. According to the analysis and comparison of the results of the survey between students from grade 2 and grade 3 and several prominent difficulties in teaching, such as configuration of extranuclear electrons, VSEPR model and hybrid orbital theory and under the guidance of the learning theory of constructivism, the author makes extensive use of his existing knowledge system to do researches on practical teaching and as a result some teaching cases, such as“the review case of the crystal structure and properties”, are designed.Through the survey, this paper reflects many teachers’ doubts in the teaching of BOOK 3. And finally it summarizes several problems which are frequently discussed by the teachers, such as analysis of hybrid orbital theory of nitric acid and sulfuric acid、The polarity of bonds and molecules and definition of the bond energy and so on.In sum, this paper presents a more complete knowledge system in the field of The Structure and Properties of Matter for the teachers and students, and it offers many practical references to the teaching of the structure and properties of matter, especially the teaching of BOOK 3.
