In June 2001, the Ministry of Education has formally issued the"Symposium on Curriculum Reform of School Education (trial edition)"and decided to greatly promote the curriculum reform of school education, to readjust and reform the curriculum system, construction and contents of the school education, to construct a new curriculum system which will meet the requirements of the quality education. The new round English curriculum system, which includes new concept of English curriculum, new English curriculum assessment and new English coursebooks, brings about a great shock to the old English education system. Guided by the new standards of English curriculum, more and more English coursebooks have made their way to the market. The rigid framework of"one syllabus one coursebook"is broken. Local education departments have the freedom to choose coursebooks by themselves. The wealth of published English coursebooks makes selecting the right coursebook a challenging task. Teachers and students need to be able to make informed and appropriate choices when selecting coursebooks and supporting materials. So, choosing the right textbook is becoming more and more important at all levels of ELT schools. How do teachers make their choices becomes a serious problem. In the past, people preferred to choose coursebook depending on subjective impression. This is not scientific and systematic for evaluating the coursebook. Nowadays, people trend to evaluate the coursebook more scientifically and systematically. Faced with the rich variety of coursebooks available on the market, more and more educationists start to concern about whether these new English coursebooks can meet the needs of new curriculum reform in English teaching and learning. As the New Standard English is used in Guilin, the author makes a survey for the NSE in order to find out the merits and demerits of the coursebook in use. Then, suggestions are made in this thesis for helping the teachers who use the NSE coursebook. This thesis consists of six chapters:Chapter One briefly describes the current curriculum reform in basic education and the significance of the present study.Chapter Two gives an overview of the coursebook evaluation theory including the definition of coursebook and coursebook evaluation, roles of coursebook in ELT, purposes and approaches to the coursebook evaluation, and criteria for coursebook evaluation.Chapter Three makes a description of the case study on NSE coursebook.Chapter Four analyzes the data that have been collected and evaluate the NSE coursebook.Chapter Five finds out the merits and demerits of NSE in use and puts forward some useful suggestions for effective English teaching.Chapter Six makes a conclusion of the whole thesis.
