As the important method of ideological and political education, self-education is not only an important way of personal cultivation and development, but also an educational mode that ideological and political educators in universities and colleges attach great importance. In recent years, with the continuous reform of education in China, the ideological and political educators in colleges and universities are increasingly aware of the importance of play to the students’ initiative and main body status. Of course, in the rapid development of the information age, much attention has been paid to “it is never too old to learn”, also makes the college students recognize the necessity of self-education and lifelong education. Self-education is focusing on “self” throughout the course of the ideological and political education, is a method that college students according to certain ideological and political education goals, and under the guide and help of ideological political educators, take the campus culture, network technology, practical activities as the carrier, through their own internal ideological struggle, absorbing the advanced ideas consciously, correct wrong behaviors, and strengthen their study continuously, improve their ideological cognition and moral level. Self-education is one of the effective methods of college students to improve their own quality, the implementation of college students’ self-education is conducive to improve their self cognitive ability, is good for college students’ own initiative into full play to self-motivation, self-evaluation and self-management, has an important significance for colleges’ cultivation of independence. Therefore, the ideological and political educators should respect the students’ subject status, give full play to the initiative and creativity of students, college students also have to be self-education actively, do the master of self-development.This paper adhere to the overall goal of the ideological and political education as the instruction, using literature method and comprehensive analysis to study in detail about the college students’ self-education, is divided into three parts.The first part discusses the basic theory of college students’ self-education in detail. Analyzes the meaning of self, self-education firstly, and defines the relationship between the ideological and political education and college students’ self-education, describes avariety of ways of college students’ self-education, features, functions and theoretical basis, which demonstrates the importance and necessity of the college students’ self-education.The second part mainly summarizes many problems that exist in the implementation of current college students’ self-education activities, and makes a systematic analysis on the reasons of these problems, which is a deep grasp on the current status of college students’ self-education, also provides a basis for the following research.The third part is the key part of the thesis, explores the specific ways to strengthen and improve the college students’ self-education in-depth on basis of the existing research results. Then building the cultivation mode of college students’ self-education from many aspects, including the concept guidance of self-education, the ability training of college students’ self-education, the innovation and transformation of teaching method, construction of auxiliary carriers of the self-education, so as to provide some reference for college students to carry out self-education.
