| Vocabulary is one of the three most important components of language. Mastery of enough vocabulary is the key to the successful language application. The number of vocabulary that learners master influences the development of their language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. However, due to the lack of proper vocabulary learning strategies, junior high school students always get half the results with double the effort in learning pronunciation, spelling, meaning and usage of vocabulary. For that reason, based on the investigation and analysis, this study tries to learn about the current situation of Zhangzhou Municipal Junior High School Students’ English vocabulary learning strategies use under the background of the new curriculum reform, so as to guide students to solve the problems that they meet in vocabulary learning and choose the suitable strategies and help the teachers improve English vocabulary teaching methods and teaching efficiency.Under the guidance of the memory theory, the theory of depth of processing, constructivist learning theory and theory of multiple intelligences, the study designs the questionnaire and interview outline from the five dimensions of vocabulary learning strategies, namely meta-cognitive strategies, cognitive strategies, resource strategies, memory strategies and practical strategies. By undertaking the questionnaire among 300 Zhangzhou junior high school students and the interview of 18 students, with the help of SPSS, the writer tries to find out: 1) the frequency of vocabulary learning strategies that junior high school students use; 2) the correlation between strategy use and learning achievements; 3) the differences in strategy use among the students who have different learning achievement; and 4) the influence of phonetic teaching in Zhangzhou junior high school to the vocabulary learning.Through the analysis of the data, the writer finds that most of junior high school students use vocabulary learning strategies but not in a high level; the writer also finds vocabulary strategies have a strong correlation with the students’ learning achievements, and there is great difference between the applications of successful learners and unsuccessful learners. Phonetic teaching plays an important role in helping students master the vocabulary.Based on this study, the writer offers some suggestions in vocabulary teaching: 1) having the student oriented vocabulary teaching ideas; 2) Broadening teaching resources and increasing the frequency of vocabulary in class; and 3) Creating as much as possible English contexts for students to practice the vocabulary. |
