In the multi-ethnic country, the construction of national identity rely mainly on the integration of ethnic identity and democratic identity.Our country is a multi-ethnic country with thousands of years history, national identity construct depends on the nationality identity.However pure cultural identity has been unable to meet the integration of today’s multi-ethnic state,in a democracy country,the construction of political civilization becomes the core of the development of modernization.The construction of citizen’s universal political identity also becomes an important part of the integration of modern multi nation state. Although American history is short, but population structure complex, citizen’s ethnic identity construction is more difficult, in citizen’s universal political identity construction is very experienced, very worthy of our reference and study.From the perspective of national identity, this paper analyzes the development of American civic education in primary and secondary schools in the end of the 20 th century and the beginning of the 21 st century.mainly focus on the history and geography that promote the ethnic identity and the government and the citizen science curriculum that promote democratic political identity.This paper mainly uses the literature research method,historical research method and comparative research method,to make a research on the development and change of American national identity education in different periods.this paper is divided into four parts:The first part reviews the development from 1607 to 1990 America civic education,With the national identity was formally established as the cut-off point,This paper briefly discusses the development of citizenship education in two periods.The second part analyzes civic education situation in American citizen identity confusion period,Mainly discusses the teaching content of historical, geographical and political education.The third part discusses the American national identity in height unity after the 9 · 11 incident,history and civics courses was highly valued.The government also implemented corresponding measures to strengthen national identity.The fourth part summarizes the American citizen education in training experience,And in order to strengthen students’ national identity that we can make efforts in the field of citizen education.Mainly include:carry forward the excellent Chinese traditional culture to strengthen national identity;Focus on the citizen ’right and compulsory education to strengthen democratic identity;Focus on the cultivation of citizen participation ability to strengthen citizen education.
