People’s need is complex, it reflects from the simple desire to the values and philosophy. Self-esteem need is a kind of need which point to self-esteem, it also purse to self-worth, ability and recognition, and product by self-consciousness and development. Compared with physiological need and security need, self-esteem need could reflect the sociality and value doubtlessly. Current researches are about the self-esteem and needs singly, but the study of self-esteem need is neglected, and most are used in the self-esteem and need of self-esteem need. Only few studies are self-esteem need, however it carried out for college studies. The primary stage is the most important time for developing self-esteem, and there would be a lot of studies on it, but the need of self-esteem is limit. Therefore, this study hope to study the need of self-esteem, and to explore the structure and the conditions of need.Basing on former theories and integrating the results of interviews and open questionnaires on grade three to six pupils in Xilin South Road Primary School, to investigate the structure of the pupils’ self-esteem need. According to the results, the items of self-esteem need questionnaire are worked out, and then investigating the condition of pupils’ self-esteem need. The results are as follows:1.The self-esteem need is composed by the whole need for self-esteem and the concrete need for self-esteem. Among them, the whole one contains self-value need, self-ability need and self-identity need, and the concrete one contains the need for academic, quality, social, bodily and specialty self-esteem. Meanwhile each dimension needs would have the tendency of self-superior and self-improvement.1. The differences are significantly in gender: girls’ self-esteem need is higher than those in boys. And there is no significantly different in some parts of concrete need for self-esteem.2. The differences are significantly in grade: with the grade growth, the extent of self-esteem includes two stages: grade3-4 developed better self-esteem, and it would decline when it comes to grade 5. After that, it would be increase heavily in grade 5-6.3. The major factors to the pupils’ self-esteem need include parents and teachers’ attitude towards students, the peer relationship, and students’ self-awareness.
