Current Status, Problems And Countermeasures Of The Public Space In Nanning

The theme of 2010 Shanghai World Expo "Better City, Better Life" has been impressive until now, it seems simple but covers a rich connotation about sociology, the science of human settlements, city planning and architecture etc, also reveals the natural demands by the evolution of modern human life.As the primary feature and basic value of modern city, Public life is closely related to the current status, problems, development trend of public space. However, with the China city in the economic and social transformation, public space is facing the challenges that occupied by the commercial street, large commercial building and widen roads. The physical and social functions should be loaded by public space likes organize the visual order and traffic node, afford residents’ rest, socializing and meeting place, show the city image, style and feature, continue the city context, accumulate the collective memory, shape city image, inherit the spirit of city and load bearing the value and so on, all of these have not been played effectively. even sheltered by the development oriented policy and economic oriented social atmosphere, which not only makes the contradiction more and more fierce between form and function of public space, part of them have a high strength using when some others are facing the dilemma of leaving unused. But also makes it difficult to protect the city residents’ social life needs, people’s creativity, flexibility and diversity are suppressed in city to a certain extent, afterwards, It affects the spirit and culture of the city for survival, which is related the key soft power with the sustainable development of a city.Of course, this is not the planners and city management department would like to see, but the city status was come from their drawings and solutions largely. This thesis researches urban public space from the perspective with the users of public space and the urban subject--people, and via the sociological theory and methods, take the survey and interview to the main representative of public space--city square and their users, then, make statistic and analysis based on these data, which mainly involved six parts includes the social function, using preferences, experience and evaluation, interest demands and public participation, mental imagery, historical cognition and culture preservation. Author discovered Nanning urban public space has these problems:social function is hard to meet the needs of residents, public activities is single and simple, social organization is weak, space structure is not reasonable, environmental quality needs to be improved, the fracture of historical context, lack of local characteristic, poor management and maintenance, serious waste of resources, lack of public participation in the process of planning, Then, author gave a series advices to improve the public space on the three parts about social function and public activities, space planning and design, policy and mechanism, which in order to provide diversified services for the different needs by residents, and stimulate the multiply valuable vitality of public space, so can be enhancing people’s sense of belonging, sense of community and the quality of life, make the city become the carrier of life that can be visible, sense, encouraging and remember by residents.
