Punctuation is an important supplementary tool for written language. This thesis chooses the students of grade ten as the study objects. The corpus includes three hundred pieces of compositions written by high school students, and more than Two hundred and thirty-nine thousand Chinese characters and twenty-eight thousand five hundred punctuation are in the corpus. eighty students and eight Chinese teachers are investigated to discover the reasons for punctuation’s functional errors.Chapter two aims to analyses functional usage of compositions written by high school students, and to prove the features of commonly used punctuation:First, Punctuation used are amass, commas and periods are the two of the most commonly used punctuation; Second, Many errors can be found in their articles, but the frequency of mistakes isn’t obvious; Third, Punctuation’s misuse is the most universal, then leakage, and the last is tag use; Fourth, Some of the similar punctuation are apt to be confused, such as comma and semicolons.Chapter three describes and reveals the seven kinds of commonly used punctuation in their compositions, by focusing on the misuse, the leakage and the tag use, to present various forms and contexts and to find out more features:the wrong types of Comma is the largest and the most complex; The misuse among commas, periods and semicolons is the most frequent; Misuse, Leakage and Tag use of dots are tend to grow out of simple sentences and predicates containing complex structures.Chapter four combines with the wrong examples in the compositions, It studies three kinds of highly used labels, to farther summarize the punctuation using rules:The rate of leakage and tag use of labels is higher than the rate of misuse; There are much leakage of labels at the end of paragraphs and lines; Behind the mood words and onomatopoetic words, labels is easily misused and leaked.Chapter five serves to analyze the reasons that lead to functional using of punctuation in the articles of high school students, including internal factors and external factors. According to the reasons, it explores targeted teaching strategies, including curriculum design, curriculum implementation and curriculum evaluation.Chapter six shows the innovation points and future work of this thesis.
