The New English Curriculum Standards proposes that the overall aim of English course at the stage of elementary education is to foster students’ability to use English synthetically, which depends on students’comprehensive development, including language knowledge, language skills, emotional attitude, learning strategies and cultural awareness. As an important part of English teaching, English assignment is an effective extension of classroom teaching. Therefore, English assignment should be designed to promote the comprehensive development of students. But a lot of junior middle school English teachers give students mechanical assignments such as reciting, copying and doing exercises repeatedly, etc., which makes students lose interest in English learning and neglect to cultivate comprehensive language abilities. Therefore, it is urgent that a scientific and effective English assignment be made to arouse students’interest in English learning and improve their abilities to use English.Based on this background, this research attempts to build a kind of new assignment mode to meet the requirement of the new curriculum reform. In this research, the researcher adopts the qualitative and quantitative methods, mainly including the questionnaires, the tests, the class observation and the interview. In order to make an exploration of the feasibility and effectiveness of the research, the researcher makes a teaching empirical study lasting for four months. The 114 students from two parallel classes of Grade two from one junior middle school in Nantong are chosen to be the subjects. First, the researcher carries out the questionnaire and pre-test of the subjects to understand the current situation of English learning and the views of the current English assignment of the students from the two classes, and the conclusion is made that there is no significant difference between the two classess. Then the student-based English assignment is assigned to the experimental class while the traditional English assignment is still used for the control class. After four months’ experiment, the researcher makes a second questionnaire, classroom observation and post-test of the 114 students, and also made an interview of some students from the experimental class. Through the analysis and dicussion of the data of the experiment using SPSS 16.0 software comparatively, the conclusion is made below:the student-based assignment can stimulate the students’interest in learning English and improve students’grades and students’abilities to use the language. This research also puts forward some guiding suggestions for the junior English teaching:1) it is helpful for the teachers to reflect the design of English assignment and consider how to design more practical and individual assignments, which will effectively improve teachers’curriculum consciousness and promote teachers’ professional development; 2) the teacher should make suitable and personalized assessment on the students of all levels, focusing not only on the results but also the process of learning, which is helpful for teachers to bulid student-based consciousness to promote students’overall development. At the same time, in the process of the implementation of the student-based English assignment, there still exist some disadvantages and problems, which will probably become a new research topic in the future.
