English assignment is a very important part of English teaching in general senior high schools, and a very important way of learning for students in and out of class as well. The designing of English assignments is an essential part of planning the teaching. The reason why the author studies this topic is that the status quo with regard to assignment in English teaching in senior high schools is far from being satisfactory. Not enough importance has been attached to the designing of assignments, not as much as is the case with the planning for classroom teaching, and was even seriously ignored. The design and evaluation of assignments and the support to their completion become an area untouched and seldom is the effectiveness of English assignment researched on. This dissertation is an attempt to probe into this field with four major areas of discussion and suggestion.Firstly, the author makes an analysis of the background of the research, pointing out the problems existing in the process of the design, implementation and evaluation of school assignments. These problems have had a great impact on the effectiveness of school assignments, weakening the quality and efficiency of students'learning. A discussion of the research methods and the significance and value of the dissertation are carried out. The key concepts are defined, followed by a summary of the relevant literature.Secondly, by giving an account of research on the current practice in school, the author puts forward and analyzes several factors, such as teachers'misconception of school assignment, inadequate assignment designing strategies and monotony of evaluation method, which greatly affect the effectiveness of school assignment. A critical look at these problems with regard to assignment in a teacher's practice helps to prove the importance of the study。Thirdly, a deep research is conducted into the designing and assigning of school work for senior high school English. The focus here is on an elaborate discussion on the principles and the tactics for effective designing of assignments. One proposal is that the school assignment design should reflect the spirit of curriculum reform and adopt a student-centred approach where great emphasis is laid on improving the quality of students'learning and relieving students of unnecessary burden. Suggestions are made in terms of clarification of objectives for school assignments, careful selection of content and innovative ways of presentation. Only by clarifying the notion of value and upgrading the strategies for designing is it possible to improve the validity of school assignment for the benefit of students.Lastly, the dissertation focuses on the methods and tactics for coaching senior high school students and evaluating their work on English assignments. It is especially the approaches to coaching which is ignored for long that enough attention should be directed to. It is required by the new curriculum reform that innovative and multiple evaluation strategies, methods and techniques should be experimented and encouraged so that students are given the right and opportunity to evaluate their own school work. This can help ensure better feedback to benefit the students who will take up more responsibility for their own learning and have more chances to cultivate their potential and develop their abilities.Undoubtedly, there remain more problems unsettled or questions unanswered due to the limit to the extent of the author's current knowledge and ability. This surely leaves more room for improvement and further research.
