BackgroundWorld Federation for Medical Education (WFME) pointed out definitely that the goal of continuing medical education is to provide opportunities for health care professionals to master what are new, gain fresh insights into the diagnosis and management of clinical conditions, and improve their attitudes, to meet the health service need and promote the health care development. Psychiatry as a practical clinical discipline, meets a lot of opportunities and challenges in the field of continuing medical education while the related research is short of. Therefore we need to do the research pertinently, insistently, and thoroughly.ObjectiveThe study is to understand main motives of the psychiatrists participating in the continuing medical education, to find out the related needs, satisfaction index to the education, and the influence factors, in order to bring up the corresponding strategies for developing the education.MethodsThe research took 500 first-line doctors from 1 municipal psychiatric hospital and 19 district-level hospitals as survey examples and all participants were asked to complete an anonymous questionnaire. I used apidata 3.1 to create the database and SPSS 16.0 to analyze the data. The main statistical analysis techniques I used include Chi Square Test and Binary Logistic Regression and so on.Results1、42.82% of the subjects think that the present continuing education policy is "excellent or good", and 53.64% of the subjects prefer to choose "know the policy or know the policy well", which shows psychiatrists in Shanghai valued the education highly. It also shows the psychiatrists from higher level hospitals, working longer, or with higher titles are apt to know more about the policies.2、There are 386 subjects have participated the continuing medical education during the recent three years which is 85.21% of the total amount. It’s to say that, at this stage, most of the psychiatrists in Shanghai participate in the continuing education actively. It also shows that the subjects from high level hospitals or with higher titles participate in the education less.3、Most of the subjects are satisfied with the present continuing medical education mainly on the three aspects: ①teachers’ attitudes (64.5%) ②clear purpose of training (61.4%) ③training content (59.6%).It also shows that the hospital levels, departments, work length, and titles are the influence factors on the satisfaction index.4、In the research,55.63% of the subjects chose "there is time conflict existing between training and clinical work",54.30% of the subjects chose "the teaching styles are inflexible"; 71.52% of the subjects thought the most urgent problem to be solved is "weak research ability", while 54.75% of the subjects chose "out of date professional knowledge". It also shows that there are 311 (68.65%) subjects got training from their own hospitals,224 (53.86%) from academic conferences,223 (49.23%) from workshops, most of which are traditional training styles. By correlation analysis, the urgent needs of the psychiatrists in Shanghai are to improve their practical ability and update their knowledge. Therefore we need to improve the education on content and styles.5、The continuing medical education in shanghai is clinical requirements oriented. As for the teaching method, most of the subjects prefer to choose "case based teaching", "explanation and practice", and so on. As for the amount of processing time, most of the subjects think 10-20 hours is acceptable. As for the teaching style, "training inside hospitals", "medical advanced study", and "workshops" are preferred.Recommendations①To strength policy guidance and organizational support, and make mandatory provision of continuing medical education for health care professionals with lower titles. ②To improve and perfect the related management regulations, and offer personalized training to psychiatrists with different titles, hospital levels, and training needs. ③To improve and perfect evaluation on continuing medical education, and establish an operational, practical psychiatric continuing medical education assessment and management system.
