Language is constantly changing and words can reflect this kind of change. Based on a cognitive structure, new meanings of a word turn up and connect with each other by a way of motivation. The arising of new meanings can be considered as an innovation. Using metaphor and metonymy can help learn the extended meanings of a polysemous word better. The polysemous teaching is very important, but it often causes problems. Students are often used to learning the multiple senses by rote with low effect. In fact, the meanings of a polysemous word are extended from the original meaning under the theory of metaphor and metonymy. With the help of these two theories, students can get away from the unrelated and unsystematic meanings and stop rote learning. In order to improve the effect of polysemy teaching, we make a teaching experiment for a semester. The subjects of the research are 94 students from two classes of Grade One, Tongxiang No.1 Senior High School. We treated class 9 as the experiment class and class 1 as the control class. With the questionnaire, pre-test,post-test and SPSS17.0 as instruments, we analyzed the connections among the extended meanings of polysemous words under the theory of metaphor and metonymy in experiment class. While in control class the traditional teaching method was used. After the teaching experiment, we used SPSS to analyze the results of polysemy tests. The research results show that: there is significant difference between the two classes(P=0.038<0.05). So using the theory of metaphor and metonymy in English class can improve the effect of polysemy teaching. Therefore, teachers may try to analyze the connections among the extended senses of polysemous words and help students improve the effect of vocabulary learning.
