| The motto of a university is its soul; it embodies the university’s educational goals and mission; and it is the spiritual home for the teachers and students at the university. With the emergence and development of higher education, school mottos developed gradually. School mottos play a significant role in improving education quality, in building students’correct outlook on life, value and worldview. The research of the function of school motto has on ideological and political education has its practical significance in order to promote a healthy development.The function of school motto on ideological and political education is the thesis of this paper; this paper gives an analysis of the origin and development of school mottos, at the same time, provides a discussion about the ideological content and the characteristics of school motto. School motto of colleges and universities is the condensation of its unique historical tradition and maintains particularity to its time and age, embodying the school characteristics. This paper focuses on the function of school motto over ideological and political education, such as its unifying function, guidance function, encouragement function, influence function, and constraint function. The paper reveal the differences between each function, as well as how all functions blur its distinction and mutually serve its purpose. School motto guides the building of university spirit, and is intimately tied to the university spirit and its educational goals, and is crucial to the formation of the correct life values for the students. The paper also analyzes the future development of China’s college motto. It points out that many school mottos are given a new connotation in the new era, or are redesigned accordingly, to further help improve the quality of higher education.
