The College Motto Role Of Ideological And Political Education Research

University motto reflects the tradition of running a university, represents its teaching principlesand campus culture, and shows its far-reaching history and culture, and distinguished features. Universitymotto, the core of university spirit, is basic code of conduct and ethics commonly obeyed by teachers andstudents. Ideological and political education is based on ethic and personality education, which could beformed during quite a long and stable time; university motto is a mirror of university spirit, university idea,traditional history and education philosophy, that is to say, a university motto, aiming at ideological andpolitical education, is the condensation of university spirit, idea, culture etc. The influence and civilizationby the motto in the university would foster appropriate worldview and outlook on life and value forstudents.Starting with the connotation of “Xiao Xun”, this paper clarifies that the entity of “Xiao Xun” inmodern Chinese originates from “motto” in western church schools, but the identification of “Xiao Xun”stems from its notion in Japan. Detailed analysis on the historical changes of university motto during fourperiods of early Republic, the Republic of China, the founding of new China and reform and opening-upshows features of diversity, time character, stability, generality and ideology, and its functions inideological and political education from five aspects--guidance, cultivation, inspiration, coherence andrestriction. However, it functions subtly and slowly in ideological and political education. There exist manyproblems, like severity of formalization, lack of personality, insufficient propaganda, excessiveutilitarianism etc. In order to solve these problems and hardship, this paper proposes to enhance thepropaganda of university motto in Ideological and political education and explore its cultural connotation deeply, to carry forward university spirit and highlight its idea of running a university, and to advocateindividual university motto.
