The article "The teachers from two different countries taught, "Cinderella" became a hot issue on the community, and it also took me some thinking in the teaching of reading. Although it is a fairy tale, but the two teachers from different countries teach in very different ways. American teacher slowly guides students to explore, inspire students to creative thinking by asking 12 questions, and the teaching effect is very significant. The Chinese teacher emphasizes on the structural words, phrases, sentences and articles that stifles students’ mind and creativity. This is the current situation of foreign language teaching in China. The reason is that the Chinese students are in foreign language learning environment, rather than the second language acquisition environment. In addition, there are a large number of the students in the classroom, the great pressure of examinations and other factors. The time is extremely limited for students when they output the language in the classroom, so it is very necessary for Chinese students to expand the output of information by reading.By teaching and communicating with students and experienced teacher, the researcher realizes that a new teaching method must be introduced to English class in order to change the old way of teaching English. Inquiry teaching emphasized student independent and cooperative learning as a precondition in the teaching process. The students inspire by inducing teachers to ask questions explore, discuss issues and be able to freely express their views, so as to achieve the purpose of improving student learning ability. So inquiry teaching will change teacher-centered classes into student-oriented classes, and it arouses students’ interest in learning English and their independent learning ability, which can improve student’s reading comprehension. In this thesis, the theoretical foundation of inquiry teaching, the definition, characteristics, principles, modes of inquiry teaching are dealt with first and then it gives a literature review. This thesis takes two classes from Le’an No.2 middle school as the object of research and the research methods are such as literature review, interview, questionnaire and experiment. It aims to find out the significance of inquiry teaching by comparing the results of pre-experiment and post-experiment tests.The results indicate the inquiry teaching has a significant effect in teaching reading in junior middle school in towns, specific in: ①Cooperative inquiry teaching mode improve the situation of managing the overload students in each classroom in towns. It can make the management more orderly.②Independent inquiry teaching mode can stimulate students’ interests of learning English. It also arouses students’ learning enthusiasm. Meanwhile, students change passive learning into active participation. There are active interactions between students and teachers and among students themselves. Students have fostered independent thinking habit and they have also improved their abilities of learning English by themselves. ③Inquiry teaching method enhances their consciousness of using reading strategies and how to evaluate the reflection of consciousness, which has a profound impact on helping students to lifelong learning.The researcher gets the following enlightenments according to the results. ①On the design of teaching contents, teachers should obey interesting, feasible and significant principles. ②Inquiry teaching manifests students’ subject role and teachers’ leading role. Therefore, the teacher needs to catch their role in teaching process. They can’t leave the students alone, or do all the things for the students. The teachers should guide the students in time and tell them to use their brains and hands. Let their students learn to solve their own problems.③ Inquiry teaching mode is effective through experiments and investigation, but that does not mean that traditional teaching method is totally negative, we can combine these two teaching methods to improve teaching better..
