It is well-known that English reading is not only the important method of students gaining knowledge, but it is part of the most important content of the senior English teaching. However, the present English reading teaching in our high schools is very dissatisfactory, for though the 21st century is an information age, many methods of teaching English reading are still very traditional, which results in very low efficiency in teaching English reading. Such low efficiency is reflected by students' poor abilities of independence and co-operation in reading. Therefore, it has become very necessary to work out a new effective mode of teaching of English reading so as to improve the English reading teaching in our high schools. In recent years, with the information technology introduced into the educational field, though many English experts and teachers have widely studied and experimented the wed-based English reading mode, and there have been great achievements in this aspect, totally speaking, the result is not very satisfactory.One of the aims of the research is to construct a new interactive mode of teaching English reading in the urban high school, by taking into consideration of the web-based environment. And its feasibility and effectiveness are verified through the investigation,analysis and teaching experiment. The evaluation of this teaching mode demonstrates that teachers to some degree can successfully help change the students' reading style from the passive one to that of independence and co-operation and the goal of improving our high school reading teaching is achieved.This study is made by mainly using the following methods of research: Literature Review, data analysis, Questionnaire Investigation and Experiment. And the whole paper is divided into six parts. The first part addresses the background and angle of view of the study, the problems to be researched and the present research situation of the English reading teaching at home and abroad. The second part focuses on the development of the computer-aided teaching and the present research situation of the English reading teaching at home and abroad in detail with especial attention paid to the web-based English reading teaching. The third part deals with the present conditions of the web-based teaching and situation of the English reading teaching in the five high schools in the Jiangan district, Wuhan. And the following part introduces the whole interactive model of teaching English reading in the urban high school in the web-based environment, including its theories,teaching goals,features,concrete procedures and evaluation. The fifth part discusses the experiment of the web-based reading teaching by demonstrating its feasibility and effectiveness through the experimental design, the experimental conduct and data analysis. It also shows that the reading teaching model can develop and improve the students' reading ability in general, and help them have a stronger sense of independence and co-operation in particular. Thus, the new reading teaching model can be of help to the future English reading teaching. Meanwhile, it also points out that the new model is not quite perfect in some aspects and further research is needed to study the topic so as to make the research perfect ant more workable.In a word, the application of internet technology to the urban high school English teaching has just begun and its future is expected to be bright. At present, different web-based English teaching models that apply to our country have been formed and with the development of the information technology, they must have a strong impact on our English reading teaching. The web-based English reading teaching has been researched widely, and it will become a new reading teaching model. Nowadays the resources that may be used in the web-assisted English reading teaching are rich and it is quite necessary to integrate them with practice so as to improve our high school English teaching in general and our English reading teaching in particular. At the same time, further study is needed in terms of the web-based English reading teaching.
