The teaching of reading in junior high schools is an essential part of English education. The main object of reading lessons is to cultivate and improve the students' comprehension of English texts. To some extent, their reading ability has been trained and cultivated thanks to the overall approach adopted during a long time on English teaching. However, it is serious that students usually got bad marks in tests, which caught my eye to find out the problem. Through more study and research, it is found that the learning point can be mastered only if students understand it. An effective teaching method of reading avails to improve the students' reading skills, and efficient reading capability requires cultivating and training. The Criterion of English Courses of the Compulsory Education (Experimental Draft) issued by the Ministry of Education advocates the task-based teaching method. The new Criterion considers that task-based teaching is to take the specific task as the learning force or motivation, the process of completing tasks as the process of learning. It reflects the achievements in teaching by the ways of demonstrating the task result (rather than test scores). This demonstrates the highly communicative integration of the language skills occurring while students study individually with a specific motivation, do tasks with the target language and apply the target language in the process of task-based learning. Simply speaking, it just means "learning for using, learning by using, and learning then using."Through the theoretical study and research of "task-based language teaching", it mainly aims to explore the design, implementation and evaluation of task-based reading teaching in junior high schools and later to build a "task-based reading teaching" classroom model. It maximizes to expand their vision of reading and improve their ability of reading. With the latest theory and research from the domestic and foreign teaching schools, it helps students apply the reading skills and form good reading habits. It also helps cultivate their reading capabilities and even self-learning abilities.Task-based reading instruction is based on the theory of language acquisition research. It helps students improve the language abilities including listening, speaking, reading and writing. Task-based reading teaching emphasizes on communicating through interaction in the target language. It is so authentic and operable that it will be beneficial to improve students' enthusiasm and initiative of learning English.The author of this thesis has attempted to apply the task-based method to reading teaching, which has proven to be fruitful. It offers the opportunity for students to participate and cooperate in tasks and help each other inside the classroom. Each student can get the chance to practice English and to express his or her ideas. Involved in a variety of tasks, students not only master the basic knowledge of grammar but also improve the communicative integration of the language skills owing to more opportunities of language practicing.
