English listening ability is one of the abilities that English learners should master. During the process of language communication, we spend almost half time listening. However, many English learners are weak in listening. After practicing for several years, many students still cannot make much progress in listening. Some students even lose interest because of the boring English listening class. Up to now, many teachers have adopted cooperative learning in their teaching. Many researchers believe adopting cooperative learning in teaching is an effective way of changing the traditional teacher-centered teaching methodology and that it can improve students’learning effect. This thesis aims at finding out whether there is a significant difference between the students who receive the English listening teaching methodology that is combined with the cooperative learning theory and the students who just receive the traditional English listening teaching methodology. The writer spent twenty weeks in making a teaching experiment from September,2013to January,2014. Two classes being taught by the writer were chosen to do the experiment. One was the experimental group and the other was the control group. A pre-test was conducted to testify that there was no significant difference in listening proficiency between the experimental group and the control group. Meanwhile, questionnaires were handed out to the experimental group to learn about their attitudes towards traditional teaching methodology and their listening skills. The experimental group was taught by using the cooperative learning method and the control group was taught by traditional teaching methodology during the experimental period,. A post-test was conducted in the twenty-first week of the semester. Statistics showed that cooperative learning method helps to improve students’listening ability. The experimental group was asked to finish another questionnaire that helped to investigate students’attitudes towards cooperative learning and their evaluation on their own performance and their group members’performance in class. The result showed that most students believed that cooperative learning was good for them and they hoped this new kind of teaching methodology would be used in the future.
