Competitive group activities are creative applications for incentivemechanism used in English teaching.It is characteristic of senior schoolstudents to have strong self-respect, strong sense of honor and strong desire toexcel others. The study of Achievement Motivation shows that in the courseof students’ learning, competition can inspire students’ extrinsic learningmotivation. Meanwhile, it is also an effective means to arouse students’activeness and improve their marks. Competitive group activities help toincrease students’ English learning interest, improve marks and developstudents’ cooperative awareness by environment. The purpose of this study isto explore the effect of competitive group activities used for senior highschool English teaching. Three questions are as follows: Firstly, cancompetitive group activities in English teaching arouse students’ Englishlearning interest? Secondly, can competitive group activities in Englishteaching improve students’ marks? Lastly, can competitive group activitiesin English teaching promote the students’ cooperative awareness?The study was carried out in two senior classes in No.1Senior MiddleSchool in Wuhai City. One is the experimental class,the other is the controlclass. Students in the2classes are all English learners. They are taught indifferent ways, i.e. competitive group activities and non-competitive groupactivities. Then, a comparison was made in terms of learning interest, learningmarks and cooperative awareness to prove the effect of competitive groupactivities in English teaching for senior school students.The research instruments used to collect the data include tests, classroom observation and questionnaires. By analyzing the collected data, ithas been proved that the students’ interest in English learning and theirlearning results in the experimental class improve significantly by usingcompetitive group activities. In addition, the practice of competitive groupactivities in the experimental class improves students’ cooperative awarenessas well.
