Under the tide of continuous curriculum innovation and reform in college physical education, the teaching of tennis course is facing new problems:with the large number of students, less space, short time of teaching and more learning content, how can the teaching forms and teaching means of elective course of tennis for PE majors be improved, how can the teaching content be arranged on the base of characteristics of the sports majors to meet their desire for knowledge, and how can the teaching methods be adjusted according to the actual situation of students so as to make the students better grasp tennis skills in a short time and, at the same time, let the students master the advanced methods of tennis teaching and training?This research applies methods of literature study, logical analysis, teaching experiment, expert interview, mathematical statistics, and the step by step standard teaching method of PTR is introduced into the teaching of elective course of tennis for sport majors in ordinary universities. By way of controlled experiment on step by step standard teaching method of PTR in the tennis course for sport majors, contrast experiment researches are made for the effect of the implementation of the method. The experimental results show that:(1) Compared with students in the control group, students in experimental group do better in tennis motor skill standardization, hitting accuracy and hitting stability.(2) In terms of the learning efficiency, the students in the experimental group obviously spend less time in learning than those in the control group.(3) In the experimental group, the results of students’teaching ability examination are superior to those of students in the control group. It is thus clear that, in tennis teaching, using the step by step standard teaching method of PTR can significantly improve the effect of college tennis teaching and the teaching efficiency, and it can also enhance the tennis classroom teaching ability of the sports majors. The introduction of step by step standard teaching method in tennis course in colleges and universities ensures the step by step of the tennis teaching and effectively integrate the activities of students’learning and teachers’teaching. Based on the mastery of correct motion, the teaching method can give full play to the students’personality and characteristics, enhance the students’learning interest and improve the sports majors’ teaching ability and their academic performance significantly. This study indicates that step by step standard teaching method used in tennis teaching in colleges and universities, relative to the traditional tennis teaching method, can achieve a better effect of teaching practice and, at the same time, it has certain reference significance for other reform projects of sports skill teaching.
