Based on the analysis of overweight students in higher vocational colleges in Wuxi,this study explores the current physical fitness status of college students, the reasons whythey get fat and the effect of aerobic exercise invention by applying some main researchmethods, such as documentary, questionnaire, interview and mathematical statistics.The results show: First, in those schools there has been a decline in students’ heartand lung function, physical quality and motor function in recent three years. And thepercentage of students who are overweight or even obese has risen year by year: thepercentage of boys makes up15.52%, while that of girls6.02%. Overweight students haveaccounted for a large proportion of the student group; and their height and weight is on anupward trend. Second, obesity among students in higher vocational colleges in Wuxi ismainly caused by heredity, diet, family, society, psychology, environment and lack ofexercise. Among them, the primary causes are poor dietary habits and lack of exercise,occupying43.68%and50.53%of the total number respectively. What’s more, somestudents haven’t been aware of the possible dangers brought about by obesity, for42.84%of students don’t know well or even don’t know at all about their obesity. They show alack of knowledge about sports and health care, for6.32%of students choose anunscientific way to lose weight---weight reduction with drugs. Third, employing aerobicexercise invention is one of the practical, scientific and effective ways to lose weight,which can effectively reduce weight and BMI of those overweight students. The procedureof reducing weight should vary from person to person, follow the principle of gradualimprovement, make full preparation before training, relax muscles after training and doexercise regularly. Besides, it is really important to take safety and acceptability intoaccount when making exercise prescription. Suggestion is given to strengthen health education for those overweight collegestudents; to build up the consciousness of lifelong sports; to let students have a goodknowledge of the importance of health; to increase PE educational investment; to upgradegym facilities, environment and condition of yard equipment; to let teachers play a leadingrole; to add more athletic activities; to adjust teaching contents. In brief, PE teachingshould be concrete in its contents, various in its forms, and scientific in its methods.
