As one of the major chronic diseases around the world, End-stage renal disease (ESRD) is a threat to public health which has bad influence such as high morbidity, high mortality rate, long duration, irreversible and so on. During the whole process of adapting disease, the patients have to endure a lot of pain which comes from physical symptoms, culture, and the life world. What is the meaning of the illness to the patients? How is it formed? How is it affects the patient’s mood and quality of life? This study is to explore the answers to these questions by using the interpretation of the phenomenological method. In this study, the author use miniature ethnography and semi-structured depth interview research method to interview the11patients with ESRD. Using the theme analysis method to analyze interview text data and observe the reading notes, it is concluded that the eleven disease in patients with ESRD painful nature of meaning. Naming the topics and form the following topics:(1) the meaning of the patients with ESRD in physical and mental aspects:the pain understanding after being found guilty of "death";(2) the meaning of survival in patients with ESRD space: hospitals and at home;(3) the meaning of patients with ESRD in their living world:becoming "normal" positively;(5) the meaning of patients with ESRD in survival time:reliefing gratitude to live the present moment.Based on the above research results, this study attempts to comb disease time to generate the meaning of pain in patients with ESRD and discuss the nature of disease pain sense.In the whole course of adapting to the disease, many things push the patients to go on which is include all kinds of positive and negative parts.Moreover, author attempts explore the cultural construction of the local society in ESRD diseases.Finally, this article aims to let more people can understand this ill group through this research and suggest the medical workers, social workers and the policy makers to build a more perfect support network for patients with ESRD.
