Along with the increasing of the engineering activities, it emerged the ethical problems continuously. Many engineering risks and accidents have a direct relation with engineers who are the practical subjects. Therefore, we should not only focus on the engineering activities, but also rethink the Chinese engineer’s occupation ethic. Engineers’ professional ethic is code of ethics that engineers need to comply with during the occupational activities, which formulates and restrains the engineers’ professional activities. In order to understand the general characters of Chinese professional ethic and analyze the problems existing in the engineering practice, this paper sorts the engineers’ professional ethic in different periods since modern times of China, summarizes characters of Chinese engineers’ professional ethic in various periods by comparative study, and analyzes the historical and cultural reasons for the formation of engineers’ occupation ethic. Based on the comparison of the professional ethic evolution since modern times, this paper reveals the progress and the deficiency of the engineers’ professional ethic at present stage aimed to improve the theory system of engineers’ professional ethic which will guide engineers’ professional activities better.Western engineering ethics and professional ethics for engineers play a positive role to the formation of engineers’ professional ethic, which is produced in the complementation and integration of the above two. Western engineers’ professional ethic has experienced from being responsible for the employers and the enterprises to being responsible for the society and the public, which has a certain influence for the formation and development of engineers’ professional ethic in contemporary China.Since modern times, engineers’ professional ethic has approximately experienced four stages of development:the period of the late Qing, the period of the republic of China, the period of the planned economy and the period after the reform and opening up. In the period of the late Qing, the engineers’ professional ethic influenced by traditional culture shows the characters that the engineers control the technology with morals. Western engineering ethics and professional ethics integrated with China traditional work ethic gradually. During the period of the republic of China, because of social unrest, being responsible for the fate of the state and nation was the main feature of the engineers’ professional ethic. During the period of the planned economy, engineers’ professional ethic highlights the political orientation, for that engineers need to keep the spirit of patriotism and collectivism and being responsible for the enterprise, society and country. After the reform and open policy, because of the improvement of the social cultural surrounding and technology level, the engineer’s work ethic is endowed with new meanings that engineers need to consider more about the public interest and ecological environment and shoulder the responsibility for the social public security.Based on historical review and comparative study, the author analyzes problems existing in modern engineers’work ethic, explores the historical origin of its existence, and puts forward the corresponding improvement measures. First of all, engineers’professional ethic needs to adapt to development level of science and technology, keeping.pace with the development of times. Second, engineers not only need to consciously abide by the professional ethic in the engineering practice, but also need to assume obligations to society, such as improving the social public welfare and the protecting the ecological environment. Finally, the modern engineering education should strengthen the education of engineers’ professional ethic for students, cultivating engineering students’ spirit of professional ethic and promoting the formation of responsibility consciousness.
