Since the promulgation of Law on the Promotion of Non-public Schools of thePeople’s Republic of China, remarkable achievements of Chinese private highereducation have been admirable with considerable progress in recent years. In order tomake steady progress on promoting talent cultivation quality, the main focus forschool running of some institutions at the very beginning was on advancing talentcultivation ability so that they made bold attempts on management mode of residentialcolleges, formed management features themselves, vigorously drive the reform anddevelopment of private education with the help of superiority with respect to systemand mechanism of private institutions and superiority in the mode ofinternationalization of school running. Private institutions pay attention to closeintegration of absorbing the advanced experiences of British and Americanuniversities and considering the actual development in the cause of building up theirresidential colleges. The “non-foreignistic but pro-pragmatic” manner of privateinstitutions fundamentally avoid “endemic” problems once occurred at residentialcolleges in higher education institutions. This paper starts with the interpretation of ideas and features of management atresidential colleges, analyzing the theoretical basis of management in terms ofideological and political education, personality psychology, social psychology, andgroup psychology, as well as summarizing the rationale of management at residentialcolleges in private institutions. The author carries out a preliminary summary on theprominent features of management at residential colleges by integrating theory withpractical situation. The author realizes the present situation, existing problems and thecause of problems of development at residential colleges in private institutions byreviewing the development course of management at residential colleges andinterviewing managerial personnel, teachers, supervisors at residential colleges andstudents in higher institutions as respondents. Taking Jilin Huaqiao University ofForeign Languages (Huawai) as an example to explore and analyze managementfeatures at residential colleges in private higher education institutions. Huawai didn’tindiscriminately imitate management mode of British and American universities, butto fully assimilate advanced ideas of management such as “people-oriented”“equalityof opportunity” and “holistic education” in the course of management at residentialcolleges. The priority among priorities of management work at Huawai are tasks related to moral education, student affairs management, the practice of applied talentscultivation, internationalization of school running, as well as university culturaldevelopment, all of which is closely bound up with promoting talent cultivationquality. The management system with Huawai’s characteristics is gradually takingshape through continuous exploration and practice which can be applied by otherinstitutions for reference. In conclusion, the paper puts forward developmentproposals in terms of management at residential colleges in private higher educationinstitutions in line with specific problems reflected in the investigation: lay thegroundwork for management work, bring “private-run” superiority of system andmechanism into full play, create a healthy atmosphere for management, optimizephysical environment as well as rich the management cultural connotations.
