Post-tenure Review came into being in American universities after tenure beingquestioned and called for reformed. In higher education institutions of American,Post-tenure review is a review system which aim is to promote faculty development,and review content is about teaching, scientific research and service. Since it has beenestablished in1970s, post-tenure review played an important role in protection ofacademic freedom, the teaching quality, ensuring long-term commitment of teachersto scientific research and teaching as well as professional development of teachers.Post-tenure Review gradually became the most special features system in AmericanUniversities. As an innovation of the teachers review, the development, theoreticalresults and practical experience of post-tenure review are worth learning. This paperanalyzed the origination, development and implementation of Post-tenure Review, aswell as summarized its characteristics and effect, to provide beneficial enlightenmentand help of faculty evaluation in China.This paper is divided into five parts.This part is introduction, which introduces the paper’s starting point, andanalyzes the significance, research situation about the home and abroad, and definesthe main concepts.Chapter I Establishment of Post-tenure Review of the American university. SincePost-tenure Review is originated from tenure, so the study of post-tenure review mustnot be separated from tenure. This chapter firstly introduces the establishment ofpost-tenure review, then, analyzes the background of post-tenure review.Chapter II The development process of Post-tenure Review of the Americanuniversity. Post-tenure review appeared in the1970s, and it developed rapidly in the1980s and1990s, and now it has become a trend in American. The developmentprocess of Post-tenure Review was divided the three stages: the initial developmentstage, the rapid development stage, the institutional stage.Chapter III The practice of Post-tenure review of the American university. This chapter mainly took an example of several American universities and analyzed theimplementation of post-tenure review including the evaluation institution, evaluationprocedure, evaluation content, evaluation handling result and so on, thus summing upthe characteristics and values of post-tenure review.Chapter IV The enlightenment to our country based on post-tenure review of theAmerican university. This chapter analyzed some problems on faculty evaluation inChina and summarized some experience on faculty system to our country.
