Chinese education has a very long history in Laos. Several famous Chinese schools were found in1930s. Chinese and Lao are two languages with tones. However, the third tone (Tone3) in Chinese is not like any tones of Lao. That makes Tone3is a difficulty in teaching and studying Chinese tones. The students of Laos Chinese schools start to learn Chinese when they are small, senior students’Chinese level is intermediate and advanced level, they are familiar with Chinese tones, but they still have errors under listening carefully. The thesis is studying on the recording materials of21intermediate and advanced level students of Chungteck School in Laos, and analyzing the pitch, the domain and the length of Tone3when they read one syllable and two syllables. To conclude the reasons of Tone3errors and teaching ideas by comparing to the mandarin recording and analyzing the errors.The thesis consists five parts:The first part is introduction. To introduce the background, significance, literature review (including the study of Tone3, acquisition of Chinese tones and teaching Chinese pronunciation in Laos) and ideas. Besides, this part also illustrates the experiment. To introduce the subjects of the study, the source of words, the software used in experiment, and how to process the data with praat and excel.The second part is the major content of the thesis, it’s to show and analyze the experiment data. All data are divided into two groups:one syllable group and two syllables group. Two syllables group is divided into two small groups according to the position of Tone3. Considering Tone3plus Tone3will change the original tone, so two syllables with Tone3become a small group.The third part is to analyze the reasons of errors. It has three reasons:the influence of mother tongue, speech and teaching.The fourth part are teaching ideas. According to the conclusion of the data, reading and using phonic software can help teaching and learning Chinese tones.The fifth part is conclusion. It concludes the slight contribution of the thesis, the shortages of the thesis and improvements to make in the further.
