| Imagination promoting the progress of mankind and society is a unique ability that can induce humans to anticipate nonexistent things, and it is the source of all invention and innovation. "Basic Education Curriculum Reform(Trial)"(2001) explicitly requires training objectives: Students should have the initial spirit of innovation and practical ability, regardless of "innovation" and "practice", they are inseparable from imagination. Therefore, developing students’ imagination in primary and middle school’s teaching is very important and must not be ignored, not to mention developing students’ innovative spirit and practical ability in primary and middle school’s teaching is still relatively weak, which is the weakness of Chinese education. The famous 20th-century educator and philosopher, A. N. Whitehead has discussed about the imagination in his philosophical and education writing, imagination has significant methodological significance in his organic philosophy, and perhaps so, he places great emphasis on developing students’ imagination in the education, which is in common in his books and papers of education. This article attempts to try to sort and summarize Whitehead’s thought about developing students’ imagination, and also aims to provide some inspiration for our primary and middle school’s curriculum and teaching reform, especially the reform of cultivation of imagination. The full text is mainly divided into four parts:The first part is an introduction, this section mainly explains the purpose of selecting the subject, the research status, significance, contents, methods, concepts and innovation. The second part describes the methodological significance imagination Whitehead organic philosophy, research methodology in order to better understand the training discussed more deeply grasp his ideas, also is the point of this article. This chapter mainly covers: first a brief philosophy of Whitehead and organic, and then provides an overview of the organic philosophy of Whitehead, and focuses on the methodological significance of imagination in philosophy of organic. The third part elaborates the main content of Whitehead’s idea about cultivating students’ imaginative. This is the main part of the paper. Although Whitehead has no systematic discussion on cultivating students’ imaginations, but most of its ideas can be seen in his writings. I pore over Whitehead’s books, and Whitehead’s training students’ imagination are mainly reflected in three aspects: first, the aims of education in the pursuit of imagination, secondly, curricula focus on the cultivation of imagination; third, teaching emphasizes the cultivation of imagination. The fourth part is revelation for our primary and middle school’s teaching from whitehead’s idea about cultivating students’ imaginative. Inspiration mainly from four sources: firstly, teachers should do an imaginative and conscientious teacher; secondly, teaching objectives and curriculum objectives are different on imaginative teaching; thirdly, teachers should take imaginative way of teaching; finally, students should be encouraged to use imagination to practice in the teaching process. |
