Oral English is an important link of English teaching, the purpose of oral English teaching is to cultivate students to communicate with foreigners fluently, then put what we have learned into practice. Although we have reflected English Education in China recently, and we take a series of measures to reform English education, many problems in high school oral English teaching still exists. ‘Test’ based teaching method is frequently used in high school English teaching. English teachers pay less attention to the oral English teaching and they prefers the traditional single-mode teaching method which is single and boring that lose the students’ learning interest. Base on the investigation of the situation of current English teaching, the author will try to use multimodal theory to optimize oral English teaching in high school.Multimodal theory emerged in the 1990 s, which has brought great attention of the domestic scholars in recent years. As the theory of multimodal discourse analysis expanding its research field, it has been applied to language teaching, but the process is still in its infancy. Multimodality refers to a phenomenon that can communicate mutually through sight, hearing, touch, smell, and other feel modals. Multimodal class requires teachers to use modern multimedia technology and based on the class contents to design pictures, charts, animation, sound, color course-ware material reasonably, trying to convey the information in the form of multimodal discourse to stimulate the students’ senses and interest in English Learning. The author will carried out multimodal visual-audio oral teaching experiment from the view of Systemic Functional Linguistics in Jixi experimental middle school. In this paper, we use qualitative and quantitative research methods to analyze its effectiveness and feasibility.Analysis mainly revolves the following aspects:Firstly, analyzing the interaction between the modals of the classroom and studying how to choose the best mode and coordinate the relationship between the modals.Secondly,collecting opinions from interviewing teachers.Thirdly, carrying out the questionnaire and oral test to experimental class students and evaluating the teaching effect.We will put forward the following teaching strategies from the above analysis:Firstly, designing teaching plans based on multimodal visual-audio oral teaching method.Secondly, paying attention to coordinating multimodal discourse factors among classroom and optimizing the teaching effect.Thirdly, paying attention to design the mode of multimodal audio-visual oral teaching.Finally, grasp the way of teaching about the nonverbal communication.In this paper, we emphasize whether the multimodal audio-visual teaching methods can promote the development of high school oral English teaching or not, and how to choose effective mode in oral English teaching. It has the following implications. Theoretically speaking, this study verified the effectiveness of multimodal theory application in oral English teaching. In the aspect of empirical study, this research provides the effective teaching method for oral English teaching,which will be a new perspective to Jixi experimental middle school. It can help Jixi area to improve English teaching level and promote the development of their teaching career.
