English reading teaching is both a vital means in English teaching in senior high schools and one of the basic skills of English learning. Effective reading teaching can develop students’ reading skills. At the same time it can also help them to consolidate their English knowledge, and cultivate their capabilities of autonomous information processing and language comprehension. Traditional English reading teaching takes teacher as the center of the class. Students just follow teacher’s instructions to finish the task but not fully participant in the class activity. This kind of reading teaching hinders the students’ ability of autonomous learning and thinking seriously.Project-based learning is a teaching and learning type based on constructivism, multiple intelligence theory and cooperative learning theory. It has been widely used at home and abroad and made a certain progress. In recent years, though it is widely applied in specialized teaching, the application and research is still weak in project-based learning at high school, especially in reading teaching. This thesis aims to validate the effectiveness and feasibility of PBL in senior high English reading teaching through the experimental research and questionnaire survey method which attempts to address the following questions:1. Can PBL improve students’ reading comprehension proficiency in senior high school?2. To what extent can PBL change the students’ attitude towards English reading? The 120 subjects are from two classes of Grade 1 in No. 2 High School in Gaizhou. The research carried out lasted 13 weeks. The experimental class used project-based teaching method and the control class used traditional teaching method. The author took group experiments according to the PBL teaching and analyzed its influences to the English reading ability and students’ attitude and perception towards English reading. The data were collected from questionnaires, pretest and posttest, and were analyzed by SPSS. The final findings are: PBL can effectively enhance students’ English reading ability and stimulate their interests. It can also greatly change the students’ attitude towards English reading.
